The Agricultural Heritage Museum is using the world of social media to host a scavenger hunt using the hashtag #AgHunt.

The year-long scavenger hunt is put on by the Agricultural Heritage Museum. It will have students looking into the history of SDSU, Brookings and current activities around town.

“It [the Agricultural Heritage Museum] represents history, it represents agriculture … We thought of different activities that would tie that in and we wanted to localize it too. There are some activities that are on the list that are in the Brookings community, like finding the old train station depot, that’s not on campus,” Erin Beck, museum staff member and intern, said.

The Ag Hunt will run through the 2014-2015 school year, requiring student participants to complete at least 10 activities in order to be entered into a drawing for prizes. The scavenger hunt has 30 activities to choose from. The activities range from taking a picture where Brookings was originally founded to taking a picture with a cow.

Students will post pictures of themselves completing the activities to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #AgHunt.

“It [Ag Hunt] sounds interesting and a good way to find out the schools history while having fun at the same time,” said Audrey Gall, sophomore psychology pre-occupation double major.

As a land-grant university, agriculture is a large aspect of life on the SDSU campus. Dawn Stephens, museum curator, said it is important to know how much agriculture affects us and the Ag Hunt would be a fun place to start.

“I thought it would be a good idea to have the students know where we were as a museum. And also to familiarize that agriculture is related to everything they do in their daily lives.” Stephens said. “From eating to sleeping to the clothes they wear, what they put on their face, hair products, all that sort of thing has to do with agriculture.”

According to Beck, the museum is still looking for more sponsors but they have received several gift certificates, Hobo Dough and cardio passes to the Wellness Center to be raffled out. Current sponsors of the Ag Hunt include the Wellness Center, Cubby’s, McDonald’s, Card Services, the Agricultural Heritage Museum and the University Bookstore.
