Wirth earns all-American honors

After finishing 15th in the high jump at the NCAA indoor track and field championships and being named a second-team all-American, SDSU track and field athlete Mary Wirth is this week’s Collegian Sports Athlete of the Week.

Wirth posted a height of 5-foot-8, placing 15th. With her performance, she became the first Jackrabbit to garner indoor track and field all-American accolades in the Division I era. This is Wirth’s second all-American team, after she finished 12th at the NCAA outdoor championships in 2014. She is one of only two Jackrabbits to earn all-American honors since South Dakota State elevated its athletic programs to the Division I level, along with 2011 outdoor honorable mention Jared Vlastuin.

A Sioux Falls, S.D. native, Wirth is a fifth year senior who owns school records in both the indoor and outdoor high jump, with a personal best of 6-feet, which she set indoors.

Wirth and the Trackrabbits begin outdoor competition this weekend at the University of Arkansas and Wayne State (Neb.).
