Campus alerted of fourth sexual assault of the semester

By KATHERINE CLAYTON

The South Dakota State University community was alerted Monday of a fourth reported sexual assault.

A campus-wide email was sent to notify students that the assault took place at Binnewies Residence hall on Sept. 21. This is the second timely warning that has been distributed to the student body. The other two assaults were not deemed as threats to students.

The female victim reported the following day that she had been sexaully assaulted at the residence hall.

The campus notification was a timely warning in accordance with the Jeanne Clery Act. This act requires all colleges and universities in the United States to disclose information about crime on and around campus.

Timely warnings are sent to students after the event has already occurred. The warning also includes information about reporting a sexual assault and support available.

The Clery Act requires the university to share information as soon as relevant information becomes available. UPD can be contacted by dialing 111 from a campus phone or 911 from a cell phone. The UPD non-emergency number is 688-5117.
