The African Students’ Association is hosting a conference, “Women’s Challenges and Opportunities in a Complex Political Situation.” The event starts at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Volstorff Ballroom in the Student Union.

The guest speaker is Lee Ann De Reus, who is an associate professor of human development and family studies at Pennsylvania State University-Altoona and co-founder of the Panzi Foundation USA. De Reus will speak about gender, sexualized violence, women’s rights and global activism. Panzi Foundation USA is a nonprofit that assists survivors of gender-based violence at Panzi Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The event is part of “African Week,” which is Feb. 13 through Feb. 19. The two events over the week will be focused on African women in the developing world.

“We thought that it is a great idea to talk about,” said Godfrey Havy, president of the African Students’ Association.

The other two events planned for this week include an African Movie Night at 6 p.m. Feb 13 in Rotunda D and Africa Night at 6 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Volstorff Ballroom.
