CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — In its first action of 2020, the South Dakota State wrestling team traveled to West Gym to take on 16th ranked Northern Iowa Friday night.

It was a productive trip, as the young Jackrabbits knocked off UNI by a final score of 25-13 to improve to 5-3 on the dual season and notch their fourth consecutive win dating back to late December’s South Beach Duals.

SDSU went into a rowdy environment of 1,819 fans and didn’t back down against a nationally-ranked foe. Junior Danny Vega came pulled an upset to start the dual, setting the tone as the Jacks won six of the 10 matches, including two pins.

“I thought from top to bottom the guys wrestled well,” said coach Damion Hahn. “It was kind of a trickle effect from Florida. You know they keep that momentum going and they stayed lose in a hostile environment, they keep their minds focused and they went out there and had fun. … There is a lot of grit on this team and those guys gritted out these positions again and we came out on top and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Up next for the Jackrabbits is a home dual against Wyoming at 1 p.m. Sunday in Frost Arena.
