The South Dakota State University men’s golf team added another second place finish to the records April 8 and 9 in Vermillion.

The Jackrabbits had a two-day total of 620 at the University of South Dakota Invitational, played at The Bluffs Golf Course.

Junior Brian Schultz led the Jacks once again, shooting rounds of 76-72. His total of 148 placed him second individually, just two strokes behind medalist Jesse Talcott of USD.

Charlie Jacobson, a junior from Watertown, placed sixth in the tournament, carding 79-76.

His 155 was followed by teammate Kyle Matzen, a sophomore from Indianola, Iowa, who placed eighth at 156.

Matzen showed vast improvement from his round of 85 on Monday. He went on to shoot one under par, 71, on Tuesday.

Senior Dustin Kriech of Watertown finished at 164. Joel Harrington, a junior from Stillwater, Minn., shot 166.

“Even though we took second place again, it has been a fine line between second and winning the tournament,” coach Bob Brotsky said.

Host USD’s first team won the five-team tournament with a team total of 610. The Jacks finished at 620 to claim second. Augustana took third with 626.

“We are improving all of the time as the season progresses. Now we can get outside and get in some quality practice time and that will show in the scores,” Brotsky said.

The Jacks played at the NCAA Regional Qualifier, April 15 and 16 in Lincoln, Neb.

Next up for SDSU is the Minnesota State University, Mankato Invitational April 26 and 27.
