SDSU sweeps duals

The SDSU Jackrabbit wrestling squad went undefeated in dual action this past Saturday at the Buena Vista Duals in Storm Lake, Iowa. Highlights for the day included racking up ten total pins and having four wrestlers going undefeated for the day.

The Jacks began the day with a 25-17 victory over Coe (Iowa) College.

The Staters were led by pins from Tyler Jones at 184 and Tim Boldt at 197.

Individual victories also came from Kris Dozark at 133, Jeremy Roe at 141, Jared Barnes at 149, and Joe Kenton at 157.

SDSU then defeated the hosting Buena Vista squad by the score of 32-12.

The Jackrabbits were led by pins from Jones and heavyweight Cody Nehl and major decisions by Bryan Cowdin at 174 and Boldt. Victories were also notched by Roe, Barnes, and Tyler Bryant at 165.

The wrestlers came away from their third dual of the day with a 40-6 win over Dana (Neb.). After forfeiting the 125 weight, SDSU swept the remaining nine matches with Barnes, Shawn Vanhove at 157, Bryant, and Jones all recording first-round pins. Other wins were achieved by Dozark, Roe, Cowdin, Boldt, and Nehl.

The Jacks completed their undefeated day with a 30-12 triumph over Simpson (Iowa). Jones recorded his fourth pin of the day with victories also being earned by Roe, Barnes, Kenton, Bryant, Boldt, and Scott King at 174.

Jones, Roe, Barnes, and Boldt had perfect 4-0 records for the day with Jones pinning all four of his opponents. Bryant went 3-0 on Saturday, highlighted by two pins.

SDSU Coach Jason Liles was quite pleased with his team’s performance on Saturday as the Jacks faced some of the top wrestling teams in Division III.

“It was exactly what we needed,” Liles said. “It was a great weekend for us.”

The SDSU wrestlers traveled to Minneapolis to face Division III power Augsburg Tuesday, Feb. 4 and will be in action again next Tuesday when they host Southwest State. The dual at Frost Arena begins at 7 p.m.
