staff

Award-winning designer and author Tim Harrower will be teaching a workshop Thursday, March 27, as main presenter at the Fillbrandt Seminar.

The day-long workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room C at the east end of the Swiftel Center. There is no charge, but due to limited space, those interested must pre-register by March 19.

Harrower, whose background is mostly in newspaper design, will instruct on retooling type, writing more effective headlines, dull and confusing layouts, and smart team design of packaged stories and visual elements.

Harrower’s book, “The Newspaper Designer’s Handbook” is used widely as a university design textbook. He also helped the Oregonian in Portland, Ore., in a redesign that helped place them in the top 20 best designed newspapers in the world.

The Fillbrandt Seminar is sponsored through an endowment by Marian and Casey Fillbrandt to the SDSU Department of Journalism and Mass Communications. Casey Fillbrandt was the first general manager of the South Dakota Newspaper Association.

A box lunch will be provided for those who pre-register. To do so, contact Betty Nelson in the journalism department at 688-4171.
