Brookings to turn 125 years old

A gathering of 21 area residents at the Brookings Public Library last Thursday resulted in a long list of ways to celebrate 125 years in Brookings.

While the official name for the 125-year anniversary is quasquicentennial, the celebration for Brookings will likely be “Brookings Alive at One-Twenty-Five.”

Participants began voicing ideas that they hope could make a year-long celebration exciting and memorable for children, teens and adults.

Some of the suggestions included developing a logo and slogan and organizing fundraisers, tours and historically informative events.

The group hopes to incorporate its logo and theme into memorabilia that can be purchased throughout the Brookings community.

The year-long celebration will likely culminate with a special weekend celebration, possibly in July, complete with a parade and other activities.

The planning committee has scheduled a second meeting for 7 p.m. on May 15 at the Brookings Public Library Cooper Room A.

Anyone who is willing to share historic photographs of the Brookings community should take them to the Town & Country Shopper at 609 Fifth Ave.

The photos will be scanned so the originals can be returned to the owner.
