On Wednesday afternoon, the City Council voted 4-3 to put the referred issue of Sunday takeaway beer sales on the ballot in the April 2004 city election.

Councilor Zeno Wicks, who voted for the April 2004 placement explained that putting the issue on the ballot then would be in “concurrence with what the Chamber of Commerce here has requested, and they’re the ones who brought forward the initial request.”

On March 11, the council voted 4-3 to approve an ordinance allowing takeaway beer sales after 7 a.m. on Sunday by holders of off-sale operating agreements issued by the city.

After the council’s decision, city church leaders and others gathered the signatures needed for a referendum vote, leading to the decision on a date.
