With another semester underway, the music department presents a variety of individual student and faculty concerts along with many group performances. They’ve also teamed up with the Brookings Chamber Music Society (BCMS) to bring many international artists to the Brookings area.

The past month’s events included an All-State Strings Festival held on Sept. 25, and a perfomance by SDSU student Kent Foss on the trumpet that was held on Sept. 27. Although the month of September is almost over, there are plenty of events throughout the next three months to keep every student entertained.

October’s events begin Oct. 7 with an AllState Chorus Prep Day and continue Oct. 16 with an indoor marching band concert. BCMS will present Eugenia Zukerman on the flute and Yolanda Kondonassis on the harp Oct. 23.

Admission will be charged for these three events. A free concert will be held on Oct. 25 with student Brenna Ahlbrecht playing tenor saxophone.

Faculty member Mary Alice Spencer will start off the month of November with a piano recital on Nov. 4. Darla and Anthony Virelli (clarinet and voice) perform on Nov. 14, and pianist John Walker will perform Nov. 15.

If trumpets and saxophones better suit your taste, the Jazz Ensemble will perform on Nov. 18. BCMS will present the Minnesota Guitar Quartet on Nov. 19 (admission will be charged) and the SDSU Concert Choir will perform Nov. 21. The month’s performances end Nov. 22 with student Cara Christensen playing trumpet.

The musical Chicago will be performed Dec. 1-4 in Doner Auditorium. Admission is free for all students.

Students Wayne Hopkins on the tuba and Pat Weight on the trumpet will perform Dec. 2, competing with a Chicago performance the same night.

If drums and cymbals catch your attention, the Percussion Ensemble will give a concert Dec. 5, with a faculty member performance by Stephen Tobin on Dec. 8.

The East Central Honor Band will perform Dec. 6 at the Performing Arts Center, and a Choral Yuletide Concert including the Concert Choir, Statesmen Choir and Women’s Choir, will perform Dec. 12 (admission fees will be charged for both events).

These events are listed on the College of Arts and Science brochures. The music department also distributes flyers and brochures with schedules throughout the year. All dates are subject to change.
