Kindergarten lessons come in handy at college

By now many of us have come to the startling realization that Hollywood lied to us. The movies led us to believe college was only a way of paying homage to the gods of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll; the truth-college is rough!

All of the studying, rushing to get to class and sleepless nights can make the week seem like a dark cloud hanging over our lives. Just getting out of bed can be one of the more depressing thoughts of the day for some of us. Wouldn’t it be great if there was some kind of “instant fix” button?

Well-there isn’t. On the bright side, everything you need to know to make your day better you knew on your very first day of school. Not college-kindergarten. I’ll refresh your memory.

It’s okay to color outside the lines. There is a whole lot more room on the other side of that little black line and out there you can draw whatever you want. Take some time, everyday, to go outside the lines for a little while and just be you.

We will always have to rush somewhere or study something and do all the things that come with a normal life. But normal is just the human word for boring. The time is there for you; you just have to take it.

Everyone is your friend.

People were just people in kindergarten. It didn’t matter what color they were, whether they were rich or poor, male or female or even if they were gay or straight. We didn’t know the difference and we probably wouldn’t have cared anyway.

Make some new friends. Just say “hi” to random people on the street. Start up a conversation with the person sitting next to you in biology. It couldn’t hurt, right?

Sharing is fun.

We used to love to share things with other people. Of course we always wanted it right back, but it’s the thought that counts. Most importantly, we were happy when we shared, and so was the person we shared with.

As college students, it often seems that we have nothing worth sharing, but we do. We can share our time, our knowledge or even just a smile. Everything we can share will make someone happy, and give us a small sense of fulfillment.

If all else fails-there is always naptime.
