The SDSU Women’s Hockey Team will return to action this fall to prepare for the American Collegiate Hockey Association Women’s Division II Showcase Tournament in International Falls, Minn. It will be hosted by Rainy River Community College on Oct. 26, 27 and 28.

Due to the Larson Ice Center in Brookings having limited space in October, the hockey team will be forced to travel to Luverne, Minn., on Oct. 9, 11, 16, 18 and 23 to prepare for the season.

Head coach Dallas Shearer notes that women’s hockey is more of a pure game, and doing the “right thing” is a bigger element than in the men’s game.

While checking is not allowed in women’s play, there is still plenty of physical play. Shearer says that 75 percent of goals occur on rebounds in women’s games.

“Although we are not always recognized, our student-athletes still practice 2-3 times a week, and they still need to keep a good enough GPA to remain eligible,” said Shearer. “It’s a way to extend their playing career for 4-5 years.”

The main goal for the team is a return trip to Nationals in Chicago, Ill.

All girls are welcomed to join this five-year-old ice hockey team. There will be no cuts, but playing time will be given to those who show the most experience and skill.

The women’s hockey team is excited to have home games against Iowa State University, North Dakota State University, Rainy River College, University of Minnesota-Duluth and Minot State University.

“It is exciting to get back to the ice and the fun,” said team president Christa Friedrich.
