Icy conditions prove treacherous

Administrators are cautioning students to be careful in today’s winter weather conditions. Due to today’s snowfall, there are several areas where snow is covering ice on the sidewalks.

“Be cognizant of walking conditions. Understand it will be slippery in spots,” said Bob Otterson, executive assistant to the president. “Also be aware that there could be melting and refreezing issues in higher traffic areas.”

Otterson said the university has received reports of injuries and mishaps on campus sidewalks. The Collegian has received at least four reports of broken bones or serious injuries across campus. The SDSUPD was unavailable for comment at 11 a.m. as the officers were out on calls.

Otterson said the snow started around 6 a.m., and the snow sweepers and plows and sand trucks have been cleaning sidewalks since employees began arriving. The removal may take a while, though, as SDSU has 18.5 miles of sidewalks.
