I’m Amy Poppinga, the editor-in-chief, and I love The Collegian.

Yes, I sound like an addict, and those who know me probably think I am. But I’m okay with that, because I love my job and will work as hard as I can to make you, the reader, love some part of The Collegian this year.

One of our staff goals is to make the paper more reader-friendly and interactive. We want to host contests, provide breaking news on our Web site, www.sdsucollegian.com, and publish popular puzzles, such as crosswords – all while still informing you on the latest news and featuring your voice in the paper. Grab the paper when it hits stands each Wednesday to see what we will do next.

For example, one of our first initiatives is the Jacked Out Dorm Contest. Are you a student who is forced to live in a 160-square-foot dorm space, but does so with pizzazz and style? Then put your design skills to the test and enter for a chance at some awesome prizes by e-mailing a photo of your decorated dorm room to

[email protected]. Find more information on page A6 in our Juice section.

Not a room designer? Then maybe you’re a writer, photographer, advertising guru, layout designer, opinionated intellectual or newspaper genius. The Collegian offers a wide range of employment opportunities in a fun and professional learning environment.

Not a journalism major? Not a problem. We train everyone in efficient and effective communication, a skill needed in all professions. Stop down at our office, Room 069 in the basement of The Union, to pick up an application or e-mail us at [email protected] for more information.

Another great way to start loving The Collegian is by visiting our Web page: www.sdsucollegian.com. We will work on a redesign in the next few weeks to add to our current features of breaking news, online polls, contests and a place to comment on important stories throughout the year. We’ve also added links to our Twitter account, www.twitter.com/sdsucollegian, and our Facebook fan page, www.facebook.com/thecollegian. Make sure to check out these important Web tools, and while you’re at it, drop us an e-mail at the above address with story ideas, comments or concerns.

But even though we’re living in a digital age, don’t forget the print product. Search The Collegian each week to find the advertisement with the Jackrabbit logo. Then e-mail us the correct ad sponsor along with your name and contact information to

[email protected]. If correct, you will be entered into a drawing for a chance at a prize from the business sponsoring the Roaming Rabbit contest that week. Find more information about this promotion on page A10.

With plans for a wide array of story packages, contests and online interactivity, our staff will continually strive to best serve the interests of you, the reader. And through those attempts, we hope you can find some part of The Collegian that appeals to you.

Maybe you’ll become an addict, too.
