The women’s tennis team won a singles and a doubles title to close out a successful opening weekend at the three-day Pierre Classic.

Bethany Goeden, a sophomore from Pierre, captured the flight four singles title, defeating her opponent from Augustana 6-4, 6-1.

SDSU would also win the flight two doubles, as Molly Johnson and Katie Elifson defeated the team from North Dakota 8-4.

The Jacks would take home a pair of runner-up finishes as Elifson lost in the championships of the flight three singles to Johnson’s sister Emily of Augustana 1-6, 4-6.

Megan McDougall lost the flight three singles championship with a 5-7, 6-4, 2-6 defeat at the hands of Emma Larson of North Dakota.

“I thought that the weekend was absolutely superb, and the girls played really well,” said head coach Don Hanson. “I thought we were a little tight in the finals, because a lot of the girls are not used to playing in finals. There were a couple of matches that we let slip that we could have won, but overall we played very well.”

Both the men and the woman return to the courts next weekend at the Omaha Collegiate Championships starting on Oct. 2 and running through Oct. 4.
