Laurie Haleta

Department Head, Communications Studies and Theatre

Daily consumption: a pot; more on “intense” days

When did you start?

I started when I came to college. It got me going in the morning for my 7:30 classes. I owe all my academic success to coffee.

When do you drink?

Nonstop. It’s the first thing I have when I get up and I drink all day. It gets you through meetings like nothing else.

Other tidbits?

Since I walk around with it, I usually have coffee all over my clothes.

Emery Tschetter

Today’s Ag executive producer

Daily consumption: “Easily a pot or more a day.”

When did you start?

I started drinking a lot of coffee as a junior when I worked at a radio station at 5 a.m. Coffee was critical in me staying awake all day.

How often?

I’ve got one on my desk all day long and fill it up every hour or so.

Other tidbits?

I’ve got maybe 30 coffee cups on my shelf and more in my drawer and at home. I collect coffee cups from all over.

Richard Reid

Assistant Dean, Engineering

Daily consumption: 10 cups

When did you start?

At 10, because my brothers did.

Favorite flavors?

I drink regular coffee. I’m not a flavor guy.

Could you do without?

Sure, I’ve done it. I just got back from Iraq and we didn’t have it over there for a while.

Dale Gallenberg

Department Head, Plant Science

Daily consumption: 8-10 cups

When did you start?

Back when I was an undergraduate. I developed the habit and kept up with it.

How often?

I always have a cup with me, so it’s like one big cup through the day.

Could you go without?

I have on occasion but I do get caffeine withdrawal headaches if I don’t have it.

Betty Nelson

Journalism

Daily consumption: 6 cups

Favorite flavors?

I will only drink decaf. I like almost anything flavored. I grind my own beans every morning.

Why so much?

I love coffee in the morning. It gets me going and is a nice way to start my day.

Could you go without?

I could and have gone without. I may not be fit to be around though.

Laurie Stenberg Nichols

Dean, Family and Consumer Sciences

Daily consumption: 4-6 cups

When did you start?

When I was an undergrad student at SDSU. It was at night trying to stay up to study.

Other tidbits?

I taught at University of Idaho before SDSU. That area loves coffee, there are coffee carts on every corner. Then we moved to Brookings where you couldn’t get cappuccinos or lattes. My husband thought we had moved to the end of the earth and we went through withdrawal. That was the hardest thing about moving here.

Ken Rasmussen

Educational Leadership

Daily consumption: 5 cups

When did you start?

When I was 20. I was working on a farm and the farmer’s wife would bring coffee and sweet rolls to the construction site.

Could you go without?

Yes, but it would be a difficult day. I hope I never have to face that.

Do you have a coffee maker in your office?

Yes, it’s convenient to have your own pot next to you to determine the strength and flavor.

September Kirby

HPER Health Promotion

Daily consumption: 5 cups

When did you start?

At 30, it was available and everyone was doing it.

Why so much?

I’m sure a lot of it’s habit, although I hate to admit it. You get used to having that cup in your hand, it’s like a security blanket.

Chandradhar Dwivedi

Daily consumption: 4-5 cups

When did you start?

When I was in college. It was considered something different and cool. I started drinking more coffee after I came to the United States where it is cheaper.

I enjoy it. When I have work to do, a cup of coffee helps me and gets me going.

Other tidbits?

When my kids were young, they thought I just drank coffee and talked on the phone.

Keith CorbettCollege of General Studies

When did you start?

Earliest I can remember I was 5 or 6 years old. My grandma gave me my own little coffee cup.

I enjoy getting up early with a cup of coffee and sitting on the deck watching the sunrise.

Daily consumption: 2-3 cups

When did you start?

At about 30. I felt the need to be awake before noon.

Why so much?

Do you have a coffee maker in your office?

Yes, it used to make coffee but now it’s a piece of modern art with bacteria growing in it.
