Twelve seconds into the game on Jan. 10, the Frost Arena shot clock wouldn’t stop running. It went from 30 seconds down to zero and back again, over and over.

Considering how the season had been going for the SDSU women’s basketball team, it seemed to be a bad omen.

A 13-0 run to open the game eased those worries for the Jacks.

In front of 689 fans, the lowest crowd since December 2004, the Jackrabbits jumped out to a 34 point lead at halftime and cruised to a 89-37 over winless Centenary for a Summit League victory.

Kristin Rotert hit one of SDSU’s six first half three-pointers to push the lead to 30-8. The Jackrabbits later ran off 13 straight points to build a 50-16 lead at halftime, a season high for points scored in a half.

“We wanted to go out there, play hard, play smart, and I think that was the biggest thing we wanted to accomplish tonight, is just be aggressive,” Katie Lingle said.

The Jacks opened the second half in a similar fashion with a 22-5 run in the first eight minutes. SDSU stayed aggressive with strong passing, stretching their advantage to 56 points late in the game.

Every Jackrabbit recorded at least three points, but SDSU’s inside players exploited the Ladies’ frontline all night. Jennie Sunnarborg led all scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds. Lingle had a standout stat line with a career-high 11 points, seven rebounds, and seven blocked shots, the most by a Jackrabbit since 2006.

“It was just nice to see both of those players get more comfortable with each other and they both have a ways to go,” said SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston.

Hannah Strop had a career-high 11 points for the Jacks and Rotert added 10.

“I think we went out with our confidence again. I know the last few games we haven’t really been there as a team and tonight, we really played together,” Sunnarborg said.

Ashley Jackson did have a double-double for the Ladies with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Megan Daniel had 11 points for Centenary (0-13, 0-6 Summit).

The victory ended a four-game home losing streak, the longest since 1983-84 and gave SDSU (6-10, 2-3) a little morale boost before they return to the road this weekend against IUPUI and Western Illinois.

“It was a good win. We really got out in transition and played really well. We needed to get a win and we got it and now we need to get another one,” Johnston said.
