SIOUX FALLS — With Saturday’s action in the books, it’s time to decompress and look back a bit.

The SDSU men pulled off an incredible comeback. Despite a rough outing defensively for most of the game, the Jackrabbits put together a 10-0 in the final 1:55 to come away with  a thrilling 73-70 victory to the delight of the SDSU-heavy crowd.

This came off the heels of the women putting the IPFW Mastodons away early with timely shooting (11 made threes) and suffocating defense.

With the wins, both teams advance to the semifinal round. The women will take on the winner of IUPUI/Omaha while the men await either Omaha or Denver. Both opponents will be decided by the end of Sunday’s action.

In what was a day full of blowout wins for the higher seeds, it was the Jackrabbit men that found themselves in a dog fight.

Down by as many as 15 points, Mike Daum continued his all conference performance by putting in a career-high 26 points in just 24 minutes of action while also grabbing eight rebounds, one of which helped SDSU pull ahead for the first time since the opening minute of the game.

Off a missed free throw, Daum grabbed the offensive rebound and put the shot up only to be fouled. The redshirt freshman calmly knocked down two free throws to give SDSU its first lead of the game since the score was 2-0 and ultimately won them the game.

Other News And Notes:

Over 20,000 in announced attendance for both sessions. The women’s quarterfinal session was played in front of an announced crowd of 9,816 fans with the men playing before a crowd of 10,306.

The crowds were noticeably scarce during the first games of each session (USD vs. Denver for the women; IPFW vs. USD for the men) and gained most of its numbers when SDSU played, which isn’t all that surprising.

* The USD women struggled in the first half of their game and led by just six at intermission (27-21). In the second half, the offensive juggernaut came to life, scoring 26 points in the third quarter behind eight points from Summit League Player of the Year Nicole Seekamp.

USD, the top seed in the tournament, came away with a 73-54 victory and will advance to play either Oral Roberts or Western Illinois on Monday.

* The IPFW men led by as many as 20 points in their quarterfinal game against USD and won with relative ease by a final score of 86-70.

Conference POY Max Landis finished with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting while first team all-conference member John Konchar finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

Fort Wayne advances to play either IUPUI or North Dakota State in Monday’s semifinal.

* Mike Daum now holds the SDSU freshman scoring record totaling 469 points so far this season, breaking the record previously held by Matt Caldwell (453 points, 2006).

* Sunday’s quarterfinal action features Oral Roberts against Western Illinois at noon and IUPUI against Omaha at 2:30 on the women’s side while it’s IUPUI against NDSU at 6:00 and Omaha against Denver at 8:30 for the men.
