Girl Wants Baby, Not Husband

Libby Hill

Libby Hill

Dear Libby,

I want a baby. I’ve always loved children and I grew up taking care of my brothers and sisters so at this point in my life, it feels weird not to have a baby around. I think about having a child of my own all the time and I even have baby clothes and supplies stockpiled.

The thing of it is, I’m not in a relationship of any kind right now and I don’t see myself entering into one any time soon. All I want is the baby, not necessarily a relationship with the father to go along with it.

My friends think this is all crazy, but I feel like since I’m 22 years old and completely self-sufficient, they shouldn’t even worry. What do you think?

Dear Blues,

I’m going to have to side with your friends in this matter. Admittedly, I don’t know you, but I just don’t feel that your situation at this point in time is the ideal situation to bring up a child. Your time is obviously split between school and some sort of job (as you claim to be self-sufficient) so when exactly would you have time to raise and nurture said child? Not to mention the fact that raising a child in this day and age can be prohibitively expensive, especially for a college student.

Also, while I hesitate to bring this up, I’ve always felt that when you have a child you want to give it the best possible start you can, and in most cases that means the child has the love and support of two parents in a healthy and caring relationship.

Please do yourself a favor and before you do anything rash, consult with a professional about your feelings and the realities of having a baby in today’s world. Best of luck.
