The UPC will be showing three classic movies this week at the Peterson Recital Hall: Cinema Paradiso, Amelie and Casablanca. Each will be shown at at 8 p.m.

Cinema Paradiso is a biographical film of the successful filmmaker Salvatore’s nostalgic looks at his coming-of-age in postwar Italy and his fascination with a small local cinema. Alfredo, the owner of the cinema, befriended and encouraged young Salvatore. As Salvatore becomes an adult, his friendship with his mentor deepens.

With the guidance of the aging man, Salvatore steers through the trials of first love and builds on his passion for the cinema. Ultimately, it is Alfredo who sways Salvatore to leave his village to pursue his dreams of becoming a director.

But as Salvatore thinks back on his youthful romances and his innocent love of movies, he comes to realize that perhaps his success has come at a very high price.
