The SDSU Women’s Club Hockey Team hosted Rainy River Community College for a series of games this weekend. The Lady Jackrabbits defeated Rainy River, 6-4, Saturday night, but lost, 4-3, Sunday afternoon.

The ‘Rabbits fell behind in the first game, but battled back. The Jacks tied the score and then went ahead in the third period. The team added an empty net goal at the end to win by two.

The Jacks fell behind again Sunday afternoon, but were not able to rally to win. Rainy River jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Jacks managed to get one goal back late in the first period. Ashley Verdeck scored with 14 seconds left, bringing the Jacks within one goal to start the second period.

SDSU scored the only goal of the second period. Erin McMahon carried the puck the length of the ice and fired a shot past the goalie to even the score.

The third period started with the game tied 2-2. Rainy River would score the first two goals of the period to build a 4-2 lead. Less than two minutes after Rainy River’s second goal, McMahon scored her second goal of the game, this one on the power play, to bring the Jacks within one of Rainy River.

The Jacks committed two penalties in the last six minutes of the game, making it difficult to finish the comeback. SDSU pulled their goalie with a little less than 30 seconds left in a last attempt to send the game into overtime. As time was winding down, the Jacks put a shot on goal but the Rainy River goalie came up with the stop and the Jacks’ bid at two straight comebacks fell incomplete.
