SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota State finishes runner-up in the men’s and women’s races with scores of 55 and 43, respectively, at the Augustana Twilight meet Friday night.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN: “I think it was a good night. There were certainly some lessons learned about race tactics and the importance of different things on particular courses. We’ll definitely be better from here on. Of course, we like to win, but that’s just the way it goes sometimes.”
Meghan Ford led the Jacks in the women’s 5K with a second-place finish. Ford clocked a PR of 16:47.87, beating the previous Jackrabbit Yankton Trail course record of 17:30.6, set by Leah Hisken two years ago. Jessica Lutmer also bested Hisken’s course record with a time of 17:22.05 to take eighth overall.
A group of five Jacks followed Lutmer across the line, with freshman Courtney Stadter leading the pack. Stadter clocked a time of 17:34.68 to finish in the top-10 in her first collegiate meet. Mya Kizer and Ashlyn Hillyard rounded out the scoring five in 11th and 12th, respectively. Kizer finished at 17:37.24, while Hillyard ran in right behind her for a time of 17:37.64.
Jenna Soine finished the race on Hillyard’s heels with a time of 17:40.51 to take 13th. Kayla Christopherson clocked a time of 17:41.98 to finish 14th. Claire Beckman crossed the line a spot away from Christopherson in 16th. Beckman finished the race with a time of 17:44.06. Emma Ecker and Emma Gonzalez finished not long after in 20th and 22nd, respectively. Ecker clocked a time of 17:53.63 while Gonzalez finished at 17:54.21.
Also racing for the Jacks were Nina Dawson (18:08.92), Kadense Dooley (18:39.32), Nicole Swanson (18:55.76), Lindsey Rotz (19:17.81), Hannah Spoden (19:34.05), Abby Deutsch (19:36.99), and Hannah Neusch (19:51.36).
The Jackrabbit men ran the four-mile course shortly after the conclusion of the women’s race. Brandon Kampsen and Cody Larson led the team, finishing in sixth and seventh, respectively. Kampsen clocked 18:41.72, while Larson finished four seconds later with a time of 18:45.47.
Jackson Dutcher was third to finish for SDSU in 13th with a time of 18:50.53. Will Lohr and Ben Anteau rounded out the scoring five in 15th and 16th, respectively. Lohr finished a second after Dutcher at 18:51.53 while Anteau finished at 18:51.84.
Josh Becker took 18th for the Jacks with a time of 18:53.28. Cashton Johnson finished in 39th, clocking a time of 19:32.24. Nathan Notgrass rounded out the top 50 at 19:42.28. Tyler O’Neill competed in his second collegiate cross country meet, finishing 68th with a time of 20:06.59. Carson Noecker rounded out the Jackrabbit lineup, finishing with a time of 21:55.78.
Along with the official SDSU team, eight Jackrabbits competed unattached and took fifth as a team. Freshman Eli Hall led the unattached team, finishing 26th with a time of 19:13.98. Dale Johnson was next across the line in 32nd, clocking a time of 19:24.26. Jared Lutmer finished 41st with a time of 19:35.55. Joe Dustin took 77th, crossing the line at 20:12.66. Aiden Johnson rounded out the unattached scoring five in 94th place with a time of 20:20.77.
Also running unattached were Ty Brouwer (20:50.03), Sean Murphy (20:56.66), and Sam Castle (21:31.85).
