The South Dakota State volleyball team won a five-set thriller against the University of South Dakota on Tuesday to remain perfect in Summit League play and improve to 12-0.
With the loss, USD falls to 8-4 in the conference and is third in the Summit League standings behind SDSU and St. Thomas.
Sylvie Zgonc led the Jackrabbits with a season-high 28 points on 24 kills and added 11 digs. Hannah Klein finished with 13 kills and 14.5 points. Rylee Martin had 44 assists, 11 digs, four block assists and five points.
For the Coyotes, freshman Ava Ball led with 19.5 points and 17 kills. Morgan Bode followed with 17 points, 10 kills and eight blocks.
In the first set, USD built a 19-13 lead before SDSU stormed back to cut the deficit to 22-21. The Coyotes held on to win the set 25-22.
SDSU dominated the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead and cruising to a 25-13 victory to tie the match.
The third set was tighter, with the teams tied at 18-18 until a late SDSU surge gave the Jackrabbits a 25-22 win and a 2-1 match lead.
Facing elimination, USD took control of the fourth set. SDSU tied the score at 15-15, but the Coyotes pulled away to win 25-19 and force a fifth set.
In the decisive fifth set, the teams were tied 4-4 before a 4-0 SDSU run created an 8-4 advantage. A final kill from Zgonc sealed the 15-8 set victory and the 3-2 match win for the Jackrabbits.
