The South Dakota State volleyball team was on the road this weekend. The Jackrabbits traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma and swept the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Saturday, Oct. 4.
The Jackrabbits now move to 9-3 on the season and 3-0 in conference play, while Oral Roberts falls to 2-14 and 0-3 in conference play.
Junior Sylvie Zgonc led the Jackrabbits in scoring with 13 points on 11 kills and three total blocks.
The only other Jackrabbit in the double figures in scoring was freshman Hannah Klein, who scored 10 points on nine kills.
Junior setter Rylee Martin tallied two kills on the night but had 32 assists and two block assists.
For Oral Roberts, it was freshman Hayden Hart who led the way for the Golden Eagles. Hart was the only player in double digits for ORU, scoring 10 points exactly, all of which came on kills.
In the first set, SDSU took an early 4-1 lead, but ORU came back to within one down 6-5. SDSU then responded with a massive scoring surge and jumped out to an 18-8 lead. SDSU held on and won the first 25-17 after a Sydni Schetnan kill.
SDSU started the second set hot, leading 10-2 to start. But after an Oral Roberts service ace, the Golden Eagles only found themselves down 10-7. The ORU 5-0 run wouldn’t be enough, though, as the rest of the set, SDSU would outscore them 15-4 and take a 25-11 set win after a Finley Westover kill gave the Jacks a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, with their backs against the wall, Oral Roberts came to play. To start the set the teams were tied at 8-8, but the Golden Eagles pulled out to a 12-9 lead. SDSU responded back, tying the set at 13-13. The two teams continued to go back and forth, still tied at 19-19. But SDSU started to pull away, leading 24-20 before a Sylvie Zgonc kill gave them a 25-20 set win and a 3-0 match win.
Next, the Jacks will play at home for the first time since Sept. 25 when they host the Kansas City Roos on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
