The Jackrabbit volleyball team earned its second win of the season, sweeping Ole Miss Friday to start the Jackrabbit Invitational.
Sylvie Zgonc led the offense with a match-high 14 kills and 7 digs. The junior outside hitter finished with 15.5 points.
The Jackrabbit attack was well-rounded, with three other players nearing double-digit kills. Madison Burr and freshman Hannah Klein each tallied 8 kills, while Sydnie Schetnan added 7.
Burr also was a force at the net, recording a match-high 6 blocks to finish second on the team with 11 points. Junior setter Rylee Martin dished out 30 assists to go with 4 kills and a service ace.
For the Rebels, junior outside hitter Gabi Placide led the team with 12 kills and 14.5 points.
The first set was neck and neck before two Rebel errors, 2 kills from Burr and a block assist made the score 9-5. Ole Miss stayed close, tightening the score to 18-17, but a quiet first set for Zgonc turned around as she scored the Jackrabbits’ final 3 points on 3 kills to give SDSU a 25-20 set win and a 1-0 match lead.
SDSU took a 2-0 lead to start the second set and quickly built on it. A kill from Zgonc pushed the score to 7-4 before the Jacks extended the lead to 11-4. Ole Miss cut the deficit to 12-6, but the Jackrabbits responded with a 4-0 surge behind kills from Schetnan, Martin and Burr, plus a combined block from Annalee Ventling-Brown and Burr to make the score 16-6. SDSU won the set 25-18 on a service error, taking a 2-0 match lead.
Ole Miss gained a 5-2 advantage in the third set before the Jacks came back to grab a 9-6 lead on a Zgonc ace. The teams battled to a 14-13 score before SDSU delivered a decisive 5-0 run. At 24-20, Klein’s kill sealed the 25-20 victory and the Jackrabbits’ first 3-0 sweep of the season.
