Women’s swimmers open season with Hawkeye State split

The SDSU women’s swimming and diving team won nine of 13 events to defeat Northern Iowa 139-104 to start the 2012-13 season Oct. 19. The Jacks traveled to Ames, Iowa the following day to battle Iowa State, dropping a 184-102 team decision.

The 400-yard medley relay team of Lisa Newberger, Kayce Smith, Trina Young and Devonne Dalin captured the first victory of the year for the Jackrabbits with a time of 4:05.48.

Junior Andrea Budahl won two individual events. Budahl won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.31 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.88.

Junior Emma Gaulke-Janowski won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:43.40.

Senior transfer Devonne Dalin won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.92 seconds. Kaylin Caron finished second in 25.14 seconds.

The Jackrabbits took the top three spots in the 200-yard individual medley. Freshman Bianca Ninneman won with a time of 2:16.73, Kayce Smith second in 2:16.82 and Emma Wright third in 2:17.62.

Sophomore Trina Young won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.64 seconds.

Sophomore Nicole Grimit won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.07 seconds. Devonne Dalin finished second in 54.16 seconds.

Freshman Kayce Smith won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.50. Freshman Paige Weisz finished second in 1:11.19.

Freshman diver Olivia Olesiak finished second in the one-meter dive with a score of 209.75 points and fourth in the three-meter dive with a score of 178.42 points.

On Oct. 20 against Iowa State, the Cyclones recorded victories in 14 of 16 events to defeat the Jackrabbits

Budahl recorded the lone individual victory for the Jackrabbits, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10 minutes, 30.34 seconds. Emma Gaulke-Janowski finished third for SDSU in 10 minutes, 49.48 seconds. Budahl later added runner-up finishes in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:17.82 and the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:17.26.

The Cyclones took control of the meet by sweeping the top three spots in four of the first five events before Emma Wright and Kaylin Caron earned third-place finishes in the 200 butterfly and 50 freestyle, respectively.

Trina Young posted a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.41.

The Jackrabbit 200 freestyle relay team of Devonne Dalin, Shauna Foor, Nicole Grimit and caron ended the meet  by winning the event in 1:41.09.

SDSU, 1-1 in duals this season, opens the home portion of its schedule Nov. 2, when it hosts Wisconsin-Green Bay.
