Tennis earns back to back conference wins, secures No. 2 seed in Summit

The South Dakota State men’s tennis team defeated Western Illinois 5-2 on Friday for its second-straight postseason berth.

The two teams played out the entire meet and the Jackrabbits won four singles matches to lock up its Summit League Championships berth.

SDSU opened the meet with the advantage after a sweep in doubles.

Andrea Boglić and Parker Lawley improved to 8-4 at the top spot with a 9-8 (10-8) win versus Christoph Haertel and Bradley Holt. The eight wins are the most of any SDSU doubles team.

Mateus Moreira and James Thorp defeated Mitch Granger and Ben Yue by one break of service at No. 2, while Henrique Pereira and Lucas Pereira posted the most convincing victory at No. 3 with an 8-3 win versus Patrick Hammers and Brandon Meeker.

With the doubles point in hand and momentum seized, the Jacks won four of the six singles matches for the win.

Lawley improved to a team-best 12-6 and remained undefeated in league play with a three-set win at No. 2. Lawley then defeated Hammers 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the closest contest of the night.

H. Pereira, Thorp and L. Pereira were straight-set winners at No. 4, 5 and 6, respectively for the remainder of the points.

H. Pereira needed the least amount of games in a 6-2, 6-2 win versus Yue. Thorp needed a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Granger 6-4, 7-6 (6-4). L. Pereira closed out the night with a 6-4, 6-2 win versus Max Cederkall.

SDSU upped its record to 10-10 overall, but more importantly, 3-1 in The Summit League and is postseason bound. It is the second-straight season the Jacks reached the postseason.

The men’s tennis team joined the women’s tennis team in the postseason after the women qualified last weekend.

The men’s team then locked up the No. 2 seed at The Summit League Championships with a 4-1 win versus Fort Wayne.

The Jacks closed out the regular season with wins in must-win meets versus Western Illinois on Friday (5-2) and Fort Wayne on Saturday (4-1) in Macomb, Ill.

SDSU seized momentum in doubles with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 for the team point.

Boglić and Lawley finished the season with an 8-6 win versus Daniel Kang and Joao Freitas at the top spot. The duo improved to 9-4 overall, the most wins of all SDSU doubles teams, and 3-1 in league play.

H. Pereira and L. Pereira dominated from the start and closed out Jonathan Raa and Andres Cobos at No. 3 with an 8-4 win. The result pushed their record to 8-2 overall, the best winning percentage of all SDSU doubles teams.

The No. 2 match between James Thorp/Mateus Moreira and Connor Andrews/Martin Muadi was tied 7-7 and unfinished.

In singles, SDSU needed only three wins for the team win and reached decision after four matches.

Boglić made it a clean sweep versus Kang at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win and improved to 2-1 in league matches.

Lawley needed three sets versus Andrews, but held on after a first-set win for a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 result. He finished the season with a team-best 13 singles wins and remained undefeated in league play at 3-0.

The final SDSU point was not as contested, as H. Pereira won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 versus Freitas.

Fort Wayne scored its lone team point at No. 6 singles, but it was not enough as the Jacks won the meet and clinched the No. 2 seed.

SDSU advanced to The Summit League Championships with its 11-10 overall record, 4-1 in the league. The Jacks finished the regular season of a five-meet winning streak, including three Summit League meets, and outscored its opponents 26-5 in those meets.

The remainder of the field is to be determined, but the Jacks are in for the second-straight season. The championships are set for Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
