Women take second, men third

SDSU’s swimmers and divers concluded their season at the Summit League Championships on Saturday in Indianapolis, competing in the final four-day meet of the year in which the women claimed second place and the men earned third.

“I thought we swam very well, both men and women. We had a lot of school records fall. On the diving end, we dove really well,” head coach Brad Erickson said.

The Jackrabbits broke 12 school records over the course of the weekend, showcasing the individual efforts that represented each athlete’s commitment over the course of the season.

“Individually, I know a lot of people set some really, really high goals. That’s what you want to see. If they didn’t hit those, which many of them did, they were very close,” Erickson said.

Emily Campbell represented a visual of what Erickson talked about with individual excellence, for she was voted as the Co-Newcomer of the Year in the Summit League as well as earned her first conference championship in compelling fashion.

“Emily Campbell won the 200-yard breast stroke in just a really exciting race to watch. She came from behind to win that one with a hundredth of a second victory,” Erickson said.

Campbell trailed for the first 150 yards of the race, but she cut nearly a second off her final leg to finish the race in 2:14.51, edging her opponent, who recorded a 2:14.52.

As much as Erickson was pleased with Campbell’s race, he said another event on the women’s side appealed to him, the parents, and the fans even more: the 200-yard butterfly.

“We had four in the finals, and we finished second, tied for third, and fifth. It was so much fun to see our team place so highly. The points in that event just solidified the second place finish for our team,” Erickson noted.

The women accomplished their preseason goal, which was to finish at least second in the conference, trailing only to Denver.

On the men’s side, they competed all weekend, trading places back in forth for the second spot with IUPUI.

However, the men fell short of second place by a slim margin of 31.5 points, finishing only one spot beneath their preseason goal of a second place standing.

“The men were very close. It came down to the last day, and [IUPUI] had a little bit better breaststrokes and flies than we did, and that made the difference in the meet for our men finishing third instead of second,” Erickson said.

Overall, Erickson considered the weekend a success for his program.

“The big goal is to finish as high as possible in conference, and the women did that, and the men were very close to doing that,” Erickson said. “I’m just really proud of both teams and how we swam.

With the conclusion of the season, Erickson said both teams will be given an entire week off with the option of voluntary swimming and workouts beginning next week.

Both the men and women will start official team workouts again in the middle of March.
