SDSU softball wons two in a three-game weekend series against Western Illinois in The Summit League match-up.

The Jacks entered the weekend on a nine-game losing streak beginning with a 7-1 loss to Evansville on March 9. Sunday’s loss dropped the team to 7-18 on the season.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks improve to 17- 12 overall (3-3 conference).

The top of the fourth on Sunday brought the Jacks a 2-0 lead after a double from Devan Larsen, scoring Allison Huffman and Emily Weber. Larson contributed a pair of RBI’s from her sole hit on her three at bats.

A single from Sammy Bingham scored Lauren Chirnside to extend the Jackrabbit lead to 3-0 in the fifth.

The fifth also entailed a pair of Leatherneck runs. The bottom of the sixth included two more runs to gain a 4-3 lead.

For the second consecutive week and third time in four weeks, WIU’s Sammy Marshall was named The Summit League’s ‘player of the week’ as she surpassed the century mark in stolen bases, collecting her 100th and 101st.

Marshall contributed the most runs on the game with two followed by a series of one-point contributors.

Pitching the contest for SDSU was Ashlyn Bender with five innings, which included one strikeout and only six hits. Jennifer Sutton also pitched where she found four hits and four runs in her one inning pitched. Both Sutton and Bender found two walks each.

Friday, April 4 will mark the inaugural home game for the Jacks.

“The season is long and grinding being on the road as much as we do,” coach Alexandria Hupp said earlier this season. “Completely trusting the teammates and what we’re about and knowing that is a process. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”

The weekend will start with a IUPUI double header at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday features the weekend finale at noon at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.
