South Dakota State’s women’s soccer season came to an end Friday as the Jackrabbits fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament.
The No. 5-seeded Hawkeyes hosted the Jackrabbits in Iowa City, and it did not take long for the home team to get on the board.
Just over two minutes into the match, Iowa’s Lexy Griffin struck a deep ball that landed inside the box. Kenzie Roling was in position to put it past SDSU goalkeeper Malorie Benhart for the goal.
Mia Bosch and Ellie Gusman led the way for the Jackrabbits in shots. Both of Gusman’s shots were on goal. Benhart made 9 saves on the night.
For Iowa, Sofia Bush totaled 4 shots with 2 of them on goal. Kelli McGroarty and Roling also finished with two shots on goal.
The Jackrabbits finished with a total of 7 shots, 4 corner kicks and 11 fouls. The Hawkeyes had 18 shots, 13 corner kicks and 9 fouls.
SDSU fell to 1-8-1 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and will say goodbye to seniors Renny Buchanan, Lauren Eckerle, Shelby Hopeau, Alohi Ramos and Lauren Walter. The five were recognized during senior day before their match against Omaha at Fishback Soccer Park.
Iowa advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, taking on the No. 4-seeded LSU Tigers next Thursday.
