A Brookings man was arrested Tuesday and accused of physically abusing his 3-month-old daughter, according to the Brookings Police Department.
Bailey D. Melchor, 19, was charged with abuse or cruelty to a minor under age 7 and aggravated battery of an infant, both felonies. He was being held at the Brookings County Detention Center while awaiting further court proceedings.
The investigation began after police received a report of suspected abuse at around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday. In a press release, police said Melchor subjected the infant to physical abuse over a period of time, alleging he threw, struck, squeezed and choked her.
The infant is being treated for multiple fractures of the ribs and extremities and a possible brain hemorrhage, authorities said.
She was initially taken to Brookings Hospital before being transferred to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, where she is currently receiving care.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
