WOMEN’S SOCCER SCORES LATE, CLINCHES SPOT IN SEMIFINALS
Kaycee Manding connected on a free kick to lift the Jackrabbits over rival South Dakota in the second overtime period and move them onto the Summit League semifinals.
SDSU scored a late second-half goal to force extra time where the Jacks won 2-1.
The Jacks had posession a majority of the match as SDSU held an 8-1 edge in shots during the first 45 minutes. However, the two teams were scoreless at the half.
USD jumped out in front when the ball found its way into the box for the Coyotes and Brooklyn Bordson headed it into the net in the 54th minute.
SDSU couldn’t find the back of the net for the next 30 minutes as the South Dakota defense stood tall.
The Jacks found the equalizer in the 86th as Katherine Jones hit a right-footed shot past the keeper to tie the score at 1-1.
“It’s really about the players, they never really lost belief,” SDSU head coach Brock Thompson said of tying the score late. “That’s a hard moment to play most of the second half down a goal. We still had a lot of confidence and belief. This is a really experienced group. We got the goal and it energized us.”
SDSU put two more shots on goal, forcing one save from USD, before the two teams went into extra time.
After the two teams ended in the same tie after the first overtime period, the Jacks drew a fould eight seconds into the second period setting up a free kick from the Jackrabbits.
Manding lined up and sent the ball towards the net, which bounded off the ground and into the back-right corner of the net to give the Jacks a win.
“Special player,” Thompson said of Manding “Obviously she’s a player that strikes an unbelievably good ball. Her passing range and passing deception are exceptional and not just the goal that won it for us, which was a great ball in the box, but even some some of the balls she played in the box late in the second half.”
The Jackrabbits will play the second seed Denver Friday at Noon in Fargo for the chance at a championship match berth.
