Both SDSU cross country teams take silver in season opener
Both South Dakota State cross country teams competed at the Augustana Twilight in Sioux Falls, SD on Friday.
It was the team’s first meet of the season. The men’s team finished the late-night event with a score of 55 while the women finished at 43.
For the men’s four-mile, it was Brandon Kampson, a freshman from Minnesota who finished sixth overall for in the Augustana Twilight and first for all SDSU men’s participants at a time of 18:41.72.
Just a few seconds later, teammate Cody Larson crossed the finish line at 18:45.47.
At 18:50.53, Jackson Dutcher finished race with fellow sophomore runners Will Lohr (15th at 18:51.53) and Ben Anteau (16th at 18:51.84) following closely behind.
Josh Becker completed his four-mile run with a time of 18:53.28 for 18th, which was the final South Dakota State runner to finish in the top-20.
Cashton Johnson took 39th with a time of 19:32.24 while senior runner Nathan Notgrass finished with a time of 19:42.28 for 50th.
Rounding out the men’s runners was Tyler O’Neall for 68th and Carson Noecker at 21:55.78.
For the women’s team, Meghan Ford finished first for the Jacks and second overall in the women’s 5k at 16:47.87.
Senior Jessica Lutmer took seventh overall with a time of 17:22.05.
For tenth place, freshman Courtney Stadter ran a
17:34.60. Then came four more SDSU runners in 11th (Mya Kizer at 17:37.24), 12th (Ashlyn Hillyard at 17:37.64), 13th (Jenna Soine at 17:40.51) and Kayla Christopherson at17:41.98 for 14th.
Claire Beckman, a senior from Minnesota finished the 5k at 17:44.06 at 16th and Emma Ecker finished in 20th with a time of 17:53.63.
Coming in at 22nd was Emma Gonzalez while Nina Dawson took 29th and Kadense Dooley finished 46th.
The South Dakota State cross country team will compete in the Griak Invitational in Falcon Heights, MN on Sept 20th. This University of Minnesota hosted event is slated to kickoff at 10:45 a.m.
Jacks to face tough opponents in upcoming basketball season
Last season, the South Dakota State women’s basketball lost in the first round of the National Tournament to Utah State.
This season, the Jackrabbits beef up their non-conference schedule in preparation for the big dance.
South Dakota State will travel for a plethora of matchups against Power Four teams including Oregon, Texas and Georgia Teach.
To add to their already impressive schedule, the Jacks will host Creighton on Nov. 8, Wisconsin on Nov. 13 and Duke at First Bank & Trust Arena on Nov. 17. But before the homestand, the Jacks will take on Rice in their home of Houston, Texas
Last season, Creighton finished 26-6 in the Big East, Wisconsin finished 15-17 in the Big Ten and Duke finished 22-12 in the ACC.
After the three games at home, the Jacks will head west to Laie, Hawaii to battle it out with Georgia Tech and Oregon.
In the 2023-24 season, Tech ended their season 17-16 while Oregon finished 11-21 in their final season as a member of the Pac-12.
After a trip to Indiana to play Ball State, South Dakota State will compete against teams in the Big Sky Conference for the Big Sky-Summit Challenge.
The last non-conference game of the season will involve another trip to Texas. But this time against the University of Texas. The longhorns finished 33-5 last season and lost in the Elite Eight to NC State.
