South Dakota State University was listed as the best college in South Dakota that costs less than $20,000 a year, according to a report from GOBankingRates.
After reviewing U.S. News’ 2018 Best Colleges for National Universities list to determine the highest-ranking colleges in each state, GOBankingRates looked at annual costs at the top-ranking colleges to determine the “best” college in each state that has the lowest overall in-state tuition and fees and the highest U.S. News ranking.
“We are fortunate to be ranked by a number of organizations, but this ranking not only takes into consideration our affordability but also the 15 measures of academic excellence used by U.S. News,” said Michaela Willis, vice president of student affairs.

South Dakota State, whose tuition and fees charge was $8,460, tied for 216th in the U.S. News’ 2018 edition of Best Colleges for National Universities.
Tuition at the best affordable colleges in each state ranged from $5,218 per year to $18,276 per year. Annual costs were based on in-state tuition and fees (not counting room and board), sourced from the National Center for Education Statistics and individual college websites.
