LAWRENCE, Kan. – South Dakota State split a cold and snowy doubleheader with UMKC on Sunday in Lawrence, Kan., on a day that saw a 29 minute snow delay and an interesting finish to the three game Summit League Series.

The Jackrabbits fell 5-1 in the opener, but led 9-7 in the nightcap heading into the top of the sixth inning, when Marlee Petersen and Tina Winter belted back-to-back homeruns to put the Jacks up 11-7 going into the home half of the sixth.

The Kangaroos loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no outs, but the game ended at that point when the umpires called the game due to worsening field conditions, which officially wiped out the entire sixth inning, including the back-to-back dingers, but still gave the Jacks a 9-7 win.

The Jacks end the day with a 6-18 overall record, 4-2 in The Summit League. The Kangaroos end the series 15-10 overall, 5-4 in league play.

SDSU opened the scoring on the day in the top of the first inning of Game 1, when Krista Honken doubled home Devon Reick to give the Jacks the 1-0 lead.

UMKC came back with three runs on four hits in the second and then added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to secure the 5-1 win in the opener.

The Jacks managed just four hits in the opener, but came out swinging in Game 2, scoring three runs on five hits in just the first inning and all with two outs. Petersen, Honken and Winter all hit two-out singles, setting the table for Kori Seidlitz, who went opposite field for a two RBI single that put the Jacks up 2-0. Emily Weber came up next and singled home the third and final run of the inning that gave SDSU a 3-0 lead after a half inning.

The lead didn’t last though, as the Kangaroos scored three runs of their own to tie the game at 3-3 after one complete.

SDSU came right back with five more runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a two RBI Petersen double and two UMKC miscues.

UMKC scored three more in the bottom of the second, but the Jacks still led 8-6 after two complete.

Winter opened the fourth inning with her second homerun of the season over the left field fence. Her second homer of the season put the Jacks up 9-6.

The ‘Roos scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-7, and then the teams waited out a 29-minute snow delay before the two teams retook the field for a scoreless fifth inning and a sixth inning that never officially happened.

The Jacks hope for better weather on Tuesday, when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to take on Drake in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

SDSU takes another crack at opening the home schedule on Saturday, when the Jacks host IPFW in Summit League action at 1 p.m. Weather permitting.
