Sumner to start at QB for Jacks at Illinois State

SDSU redshirt freshman Austin Sumner will make his first career start on Saturday when the Jacks meet Illinois State, according to SDSU head coach John Stiegelmeier Tuesday.

Sumner will replace former quarterback Thomas O’Brien, who quit the team on Monday. The former Brandon Valley high school star redshirted last year and has appeared in the last two games at Illinois and Cal Poly, both convincing losses for the Jackrabbits.

Stiegelmeier said Monday that either Sumner or junior Jordan Thomas would start and while a decision had not been made, he said that the decision would be made “very soon.” Sumner has been listed as the number two quarterback on the depth chart since the beginning of fall camp in August and each of the first three games.

Running back Dominique Clare said Monday that the team had faith in their quarterback options.

“They know what’s going on and the quarterback always knows everything they are like second coaches,” Clare said.
