Valley roundup: Ind. St. stays first place

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Shakir Bell rushed for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns and caught a 25-yard scoring pass, helping Indiana State roll to a 45-14 victory over South Dakota on Saturday.
Indiana State (7-2, 5-1 Missouri Valley) also had two interception returns for TDs — a 25-yarder by Johnny Towalid and a 52-yarder by Donovan Lane.
Mike Perish threw a pair of scoring passes for Indiana State and Kevin Earl threw for 101 yards and a TD for South Dakota (1-7, 0-5).
Lucas Hileman was a significant factor for Indiana State. Three of his four punts were downed inside the 20-yard line, limiting South Dakota’s field position.
Missouri State 42, Western Illinois 3
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Kierra Harris threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, Mikael Cooper-Falls added 95 yards rushing and a score, and Missouri State dominated Western Illinois 42-3 on Saturday for the Bears’ first three-game winning streak in eight years.
Harris completed just 13 passes and was intercepted three times, but he managed to find Dorian Buford, Trey Kelley and Cadarrius Dotson for scores. Cedric Miller added a rushing score for the Bears (3-6, 3-3 Missouri Valley), who last strung together three wins Sept. 2-18, 2004.
Harris opened the scoring with a 38-yarder to Buford in the first quarter, then found Kelley and Dotson on short scoring passes in the second before running it in from the 1-yard line just before halftime. That gave the Bears a 28-3 halftime lead.
The Leathernecks (3-5, 1-4) got 75 yards rushing from Caulton Ray and 72 from Nikko Watson.
North Dakota St. 23, Southern Illinois 17
FARGO, N.D. — John Crockett’s five-yard touchdown run with 5:23 to play gave North Dakota State a 23-17 win over Southern Illinois Saturday.
The Bison (7-1, 4-1 Missouri Valley), who suffered their only loss of the season in their last home game two weeks ago against Indiana State, trailed 17-10 entering the fourth quarter. Derrick Lang’s one-yard run with 12:38 remaining tied it and North Dakota State used a 11-play, 52-yard drive to score the winning TD.
Southern Illinois (5-4, 4-2) scored on Kory Faulkner’s 32-yard pass to LaSteven McKinney and on Brand Williams’ 55-yard fumble return. The Salukis only managed 11 rushing yards to North Dakota State’s 186.
Brock Jensen ran for a score and completed 15 of 25 passes for 200 yards for the Bison. Faulkner was 17 of 26 for 166 yards for SIU.
Illinois St. 33, Northern Iowa 21
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Matt Brown threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Illinois State beat Northern Iowa 33-21 on Saturday night.
Brown was 22 of 27 for 274 yards and two touchdowns — a 76-yard pass to Tyrone Walker and a 49-yard pass to James O’Shaughnessy. Brown kept the ball and scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter.
Cameron Hunt got the scoring started for Illinois State (7-2, 4-2 Missouri Valley) with a 19-yard run into the end zone. Darrelynn Dunn rushed in for a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth for the Redbirds.
Sawyer Kollmorgen was 20 of 48 for 218 yards for Northern Iowa (2-6, 1-4). Kollmorgen kept the ball for the Panthers first touchdown, scoring on a 6-yard run. He later threw a 2-yard TD pass to Chad Owens.
