Jackrabbit wrestlers knock off Stanford
February 18, 2015
The South Dakota State wrestling team took on Stanford University on Saturday in front of record breaking crowd of 918 fans. They defeated the Cardinal 17-15.
The Jackrabbits got victories from Brance (Bubba) Simms, Lucas Zilverberg, Alex Kocer, Cody Pack, and Nathan Rotert. But J.J. Everard forcing overtime in the final match is what sealed their victory.
Head Coach Chris Bono said after the match “Proud of our guys effort. You know that’s a top 25 team who came in here.”
Most people would consider this upset considering Stanford is a top 25 team, the Jacks don’t look at it like that. “We expect to beat them all, we’re trying to put South Dakota State on the map, it’s gonna be a norm to bring in teams like that cause their gonna wanna wrestle us.” said Coach Bono. Cody Pack added “I would say it’s not an upset and we believe that we can beat anyone.”
Brance Simms had a huge upset win over nationally ranked Connor Schram of the Cardinal. “That was pretty sweet, coach told me before the match if you win we win, so I just went out there gave it my all and ended up with win.” said Simms. Bono added “I put it on Bubba earlier in the week that if you win, we win and I’m really happy for Bubba, the improvement he’s had in his attitude and his wrestling is just unbelievable.”
Cody Pack had 5-0 win over Josh Lauderdale in the 157 division. “I was just getting back to my attacks and attacked the whole 7 minutes and came out with the win.”
The Jacks return to Frost Arena Sunday when they take on North Dakota State with a conference title on the line. “It’s huge, we’re bringing our rivals into our arena with a chance to win our first ever conference championship and we’re fired up.” said Bono
