The Jackrabbits were busy this past week, competing in a trio of track and field events across the nation, marking their first outside competition of the year.
Over March 27-29, both men’s and women’s track and field teams participated in Washington University’s Distance Carnival, the Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas and the Bobcat Invitational held by Texas State University.
Distance Carnival
The Jack’s picked up a gold medal thanks to senior Claire Beckman. Beckman got gold in the women’s 1500m, where she won with a time of 4:28.48. Kayla Christopherson, who placed 12th in the 1500 meter, got fourth place in the 3000m steeple, ending with a time of 10:46.57.
The men’s 500-meter team saw Nathan Notgrass finish 47th with a 14:45.41 and Cashton Johnson finished 18th with a time of 14:22.31.
Texas Relays
Pierre Lear was able to get SDSU their second medal of the stretch after he earned silver in the 110-meter hurdles. The senior finished with a time of 13.98, finishing .22 seconds behind 1st place winner Anthony Trucks (13.76).
The men’s 4×100 meter relay team placed 26th after achieving a time of 41.17. Caiden Fredrick placed 5th overall in the men’s discus throw at 51.33 meters.
Nora Peterson was 12th overall in the women’s javelin throw of 39.20 meters.
Bobcat Invitational
Dixon Brielle ran a 13.37 in the women’s 100-meter hurdle to achieve first place and get SDSU another gold medal. Milee Young placed 11th overall in the women’s discus throw of 51.05-meters.
Four Jackrabbits participated in the 100-meter dash, with Jared Wipf placing 21st, Carter Toews in 34th, Evan Henderson in 41st and Drew Olson placing in 42nd. Lear had another top-5 finish in the 110-meter hurdles, placing 5th with a time 13.75.
Carter Johnson, who also participated in the 110-meter hurdles placed 36th after getting a time of 14.47. The men’s 4×100 team consisting of Wipf, Toews, Henderson and Olson placed 14th with a time of 41.37.
With the Jackrabbits just starting the spring season, Coach Rod DeHaven made sure to set goals for the rest of the season.
“I think with this year when you look at the calendar… our goal as a program is not just to put up a bunch of good marks but be able to back up those marks in the conference championship in particular… because that’s what we are judged on.”
The Jacks will compete in three different meets tomorrow, the USD Early Bird, the Stanford Invitational and the Mike Fanelli Distance Carnival hosted by San Francisco State.
