Jackrabbit men’s basketball head coach Eric Henderson will step down to accept the head coaching position at Drake University, SDSU announced Friday.
“Eric has been a tremendous leader for the student-athletes he’s coached and has built upon the foundation of a program with a rich tradition.” Athletic director Justin Sell said in a release, “We wish him, his wife Alicia and the entire Henderson family nothing but the best.”
The Jackrabbits accumulated a 129-60 record in the six years Henderson was at the helm. That stretch included four Summit League regular season titles, two conference tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2022 and 2024. The .683 winning percentage is the best in SDSU men’s head coaches in recent memory.
A two-time Summit League Coach of the Year, Henderson was at SDSU for nine seasons, initially joining the staff when T.J. Otzelberger, who is now at Iowa State, took over the program in 2016. After two years as an assistant and one year as associate head coach, during which the Jackrabbits went to the NCAA Tournament twice, Henderson assumed the head coaching position.
Drake has won three straight Missouri Valley Conference tournament championships and earned an 11-seed in this year’s tournament, knocking off 6-seeded Missouri to reach the Round of 32. Henderson will be officially introduced in a press conference in Des Moines on Tuesday.
A search for the program’s fourth coach in the Division One era is underway, according to the athletic department.
