SDSU was swept in their season-opening series against the University of the Pacific Tigers as they were outscored 7-25 in four games. The Jacks were able to put up 27 hits over the series but left 35 men stranded en route to their first four losses of the season.
Originally, the Jacks were slated to start off their season against Murray State, but due to inclement weather, the series was canceled.
Game One
The Tigers found ways to score throughout the entirety of the Jackrabbit’s season opener, as they left with a 7-1 victory. Pacific opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with a JT Waldon double, who led the team with four RBIs when it was all said and done.
The third inning saw the Tigers take a 5-0 lead after a sacrifice bunt and an inside-the-park home run. Pacific’s Kordell Brown found his way to third after being walked and stealing two bases. Brown led Pacific in steals with three, with the Tigers ending the game with eight total.
After a DJ Scott bunt single, Brown was able to record a run and gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Following two walks and a throwing error, Waldon hammered a ball to right field and turned on the afterburners burners to score a three-run inside-the-park homer.
While SDSU found their way onto the scoreboard with a Keagen Jirschele single, but they couldn’t claw their way back.
Game Two
The Jackrabbits out-hit the Tigers 7-3 in their Saturday doubleheader but weren’t able to come out with the win in their 3-4 loss. The game erupted in the bottom of the second as a Kaden Peterson sacrifice got Pacific the lead. Robert Orr extended it off of a Jack throwing error, and a Scott sacrifice got the 3-0 lead for the Tigers.
Back-to-back doubles from Carter Sintek and Bryce Ronken in the third inning got SDSU back into the game, with Ronken driving Sintek in. The top of the fourth saw the Jacks tie the game following a Luke Luskey single that saw Dagen Schramm and Jirschele score.
John-Howard Bobo broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth for Pacific with a game-winning home run. South Dakota State pitchers Jake Goble and Reece Arbogast combined for seven strikeouts on the day.
Game Three
In the second half of a Saturday doubleheader, the Tigers pulled off an 8-0 win that saw the Jacks record four hits while leaving nine players stranded.
Pacific scored in four different innings, with six being scored in the fourth and seventh. Brown, Scott, Bobo and Jake Tandy combined for eight total hits in the game.
Game Four
SDSU found themselves down 4-0 quickly but were able to chip away at the lead before a late Tigers rally put the game away, as they lost their fourth game of the season. Waldon drove in his eighth RBI of the series with a homer that gave Pacific the lead in the first inning.
Another double RBI homer in the fourth by Andrew Sloan put the Tigers up 4-0. Luskey, who batted .570 in the series, got SDSU their first run of the game with an RBI double.
Jirschele got SDSU closer with an RBI single that Luskeyscored off of.
Sloan scored his fourth RBI of the day with an RBI single. Luskey hit a home run in the eighth inning for his third hit of the day, but the Jackrabbits weren’t able to finish the comeback as they lost 3-6.
SDSU will look to brush off their losses as they continue their four-game series against Sacramento State. They play tonight at 4 P.M, tomorrow at 4 P.M and Saturday at 3 P.M.
