SDSU competed in the Mount Marty Meet in Yankton, South Dakota last Friday. The Jackrabbits walked away with four first-place finishes.
In the high jump for men, SDSU finished the event with first and second place. Grayson Ring and Brooks Holen ended with a mark of 1.93 meters with Ring taking first and Holen in second.
SDSU took another gold in the pole vault, where Ryan Karajanis took home first with a mark of 4.75 meters. Jackrabbit freshman Aaron Hawkes took home a fourth after clearing 4.30 meters.
In the mile, Ty Brouwer and Tyler O’Neil took home first and second, respectively. The SDSU duo finished with times of 4:28.41 for Brouwer and 4:28.61 for O’Neil.
The sophomore Ben Morningstar was able to notch a silver in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.35.
In the 60-meter dash, Blake Koenen and Nate McCormick took home third and fourth. Koenen crossed the line with a time of 7.074, followed closely by McCormick’s time of 7.076.
Koenen, McCormick and Parker Peterson ran the 200-meter dash for SDSU. The trio of Jacks finished second, third and fourth. McCormick led the way for the Jacks with a time of 22.73, followed by Peterson with a 22.79, rounding out the trio is Koenen, clocking in at 22.81.
For the women, Madison Kizer took home first place in the high jump with a mark of 1.70 meters followed by Taylor Jochum in second with a mark of 1.65m.
SDSU freshman Silja Gunderson took home a silver in the 60-meter dash with a time of 9.44.
In the 200-meter dash, Jessica Boekelheide finished with a time of 27.50 which notched her third place.
In the weight throw, Kristen Kilker set a new personal best with a throw of 51-08.50, which was good enough for a bronze.
Iowa State Classic
Last Saturday, SDSU traveled to Iowa to compete in the ISU classic and walked away with four wins.
For the men’s 60-meter dash, two Jackrabbits took home top five positions. Jared Wipf led the Jacks with a runner-up finish and a time of 6.84, while Carter Toews came across one spot short of a podium with a time of 6.88.
In the 400-meter, Jackrabbit sprinter Thailan Hallman won gold with a time of 48.78 seconds followed by Evan Henderson in second, who notched a time of 48.88.
Cody Larson showed out in the 3000-meter with a time of 8:05.54, which is third all-time for a Jack.
In the open weight throw, Caiden Frederick notched a victory with a mark of 19.19m.
The women also impressed on Saturday with Brielle Dixon winning the 60-meter hurdles and posting an SDSU record time of 8.28, a Summit League-leading time this year.
Courtney Stradter notched a bronze in the 3000-meter with a time of 9:46.06.
Grace Waage finished the mile fourth with a time of 4:46.32, 0.17 seconds away from a program record.
In the weight throw, Milee Young notched a personal best mark of 18.03 meters to take fifth place.
“I think we should be excited about this meet and take advantage of the fact it’s at home,” said head coach Rod DeHaven. “We want to create momentum the whole year, but now it’s put up or shut up time.”
SDSU’s next meet will be the SDSU Indoor Classic on Friday in Brookings at 4 p.m.
“This week is pretty hypercritical in terms of taking a step forward,” said DeHaven. “If we want to be in any sort of conversation or end up playing a spoiler role, which is certainly not what we envisioned when this season started.”
