Two South Dakota journalism students have been selected to receive the David Kranz-Argus Leader Journalism Scholarships for the 2018-2019 school year.
Laura Butterbrodt, a senior journalism major from Granite Falls, Minn., will receive a $2,500 scholarship.
Dylan Monson, a senior broadcast journalism major from Parkston, S.D., will be given a $1,500 award.
A long-time journalist and political columnist, Kranz died in June.
The scholarship program recognizes his more than 40-year career as a reporter, editor and columnist. A Watertown, S.D. native and South Dakota State University graduate, Kranz worked at the Mitchell Daily Republic and the Austin (Minn) Daily Herald early in his career before joining the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. He retired from the Argus Leader in 2010.
Butterbrodt is a news-editorial journalism major at SDSU. She worked as an intern at the Watertown Public Opinion in 2017. She also has worked on the SDSU Collegian staff, including spending two semesters as lifestyles editor.
Butterbrodt worked during the school year as an intern with the Brookings Daily Register social media team and spent the last semester studying in Bulgaria. She is president of the SDSU Journalism Club and hopes to work as a newspaper reporter after graduation.
Monson is a broadcast journalism major at SDSU. He works as a video producer for the corporate communications/marketing team at Daktronics, Inc. and as a free-lance videographer for Midco Sports Network. He is also a production assistant for the Yeager Media Center on campus.
Monson spent two semesters as a reporter for “Jacks News,” a student-run newscast at SDSU. One of his stories was chosen as a finalist in a national Hearst TV news features competition.
Monson hopes to work in video production and continue as a journalist and digital storyteller after graduation.
