SDSU kicks off the holiday season with its annual Union Holiday Open House on Friday (Dec. 6) in an event that will transform the Student Union into a hub filled with holiday-themed activities, games and entertainment.
The event runs from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Cara Olson, Assistant Director of Student Activities is one of the organizers for this year’s event.
“It’s open to students, faculty and community members and offers something for everyone, Olson said. With a mix of traditions and new surprises, the open house is an evening packed with holiday cheer.”
Guests can meet Santa and take a holiday picture, enjoy a hot chocolate bar provided by Jacks Dining, or check out a relaxation station hosted by the Wellness Center to take a break and recharge during the final exam season. A surprise activity sponsored by the Residence Hall Association (RHA) will add a unique touch to this year’s event.
Other highlights include the Festival of Trees voting, where attendees can select their favorite decorated tree, and crafting stations where participants can make holiday cards, ornaments or personalized gifts.
“The Union Open House is a great way for the campus community to do something fun before finals in the Union. We hope that people will be able to relax and enjoy some fun activities before the busyness of the end of the semester and final exams”, Olson remarked.
A highlight of the evening is the Gingerbread Decorating Contest, now in its second year. Teams of students will create intricate and festive gingerbread houses. McKenna Saur, a freshman design major from Sioux Falls, said she is looking forward to the competition.
“It’s the best way to get into the holiday spirit,” Saur said. “It’s fun and competitive.”
Planning an event of this size isn’t easy. The Union Holiday Open House is made possible by the collaborative efforts of several campus organizations, including the University Program Council (UPC), the Wellness Center, and Jacks Dining, Residence Hall Association, Office of Career Development, Jackrabbit Central, and many more.
Together, the organizations work to create an inclusive and welcoming environment that captures the joy of the season.
Kaitlyn Grimsley is a senior majoring in hospitality tourism and event management from New London, Minnesota. She is UPC’s showcase coordinator and is thrilled to see the campus come together for this event.
“UPC is excited to host holiday games and see everyone in the Christmas spirit,” Grimsley said.
With the semester nearing its end, the Union Holiday Open House offers an escape from the stress of finals.
Organizers are encouraging students to bring your friends, put on your favorite holiday sweater and join in the celebration.
