After its best season in recent history, the Jackrabbit volleyball team dominated the Summit League volleyball postseason awards.
After leading his team to a 26-1 record in the regular season, fifth-year head coach Dan Georgalas earned coach of the year, outside hitter Sylvie Zgonc was named player of the year and Madison Burr netted freshman of the year. Sydni Schetnan also earned first-team all-conference honors.
After winning his first coach of the year award, Georgalas is the first SDSU coach to do so since Andrew Palileo in 2007.
Zgonc, who is just the second Jackrabbit to be named player of the year, was first in the Summit League in kills per set (4.42), total kills (265), points (295) and points per set (4.92). The Hartford, Wisconsin native ranked in the top five in total attacks (683).
Burr, who is the second straight freshman of the year for SDSU, led the Jacks on defense, ranking sixth in total blocks (64) and sixth in the league in blocks per set (1.07). The middle blocker from Goodhue, Minnesota, also contributed on offense, hitting .397 and registering 121 total kills, being named honorable mention all-conference.
Schetnan, a junior from Sioux Falls, averaged 2.42 kills and 1.15 blocks per set on her way to being named to the all-conference first team.
SDSU ran through the regular season, finishing with the Summit League regular season crown after being picked sixth in the conference’s preseason coaches’ poll. The Jackrabbit lost their only match to St. Thomas, who had Morgan Kealy named setter of the year while USD’s Kamryn Farris earned defensive player of the year.
