The 2018 Summer Scholars Program, where academically talented high school students can experience South Dakota State University for one week, is being held July 9-13.
Attendees, who can choose an academic area to study in and learn from SDSU faculty, will live in Honors Hall for the week. There are planned evening activities to meet other high school students across academic interests. Registration for the Summer Scholars Program ends June 1.
This program is designed to engage high school students in hands-on activities/explorations with faculty in 16 different programs.
Amanda Husted is a freshman human development and family studies major from Glencoe, Minnesota. She said the program helped her understand more about the college experience.
“Summer Scholars solidified I was going to SDSU without a doubt,” Husted said. “It was comforting to see what college was like.”
Husted said she enjoyed learning more about SDSU and seeing what the residence halls would be like. After staying in Honors Hall for a week, she knew that she wanted to live there when attending SDSU. She lived there this year and will be a community assistant for the hall next academic year.
As a participant in the Summer Scholars Program, Husted met with faculty in both the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College and in the pharmacy academic focus she chose.
“You feel really important,” she said.
The program emphasizes not only the community build of the Fishback Honors College, but also SDSU. Husted, who is in the Students’ Association, said some of the students she collaborates with also participated in the program.
“I have friends now that I met at the Summer Scholars Program,” she said. “[The program] is a good way to show what the honors program actually can do.”
