The Brookings County Pandemic Planning and Coordination Committee (PPCC) will distribute 1,000 free pertussis (whooping cough) vaccines Monday.
According to a news release from the PPCC, the committee will hold a free walk-in pertussis and influenza community vaccination center at Brookings High School from 4 to 8 p.m.
Vaccines will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The South Dakota Department of Health notified the Brookings County PPCC that it would receive 1,000 Tdap vaccines to dispense to Brookings County residents 11 years and older. According to the release, the vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.
All adults must have a valid ID or driver’s license. A parent or guardian must accompany children under 18.
Five hundred free influenza vaccines are also available to adults 18 and older. The flu shot will also require a valid ID or driver’s license.
The Brookings County PPCC says children younger than 10 should visit their primary care provider for a pertussis vaccine. They also say children under 18 should visit their primary care provider or local pharmacy for flu shots.
