The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) Prexy Council brought students together Wednesday, Sept. 11, with free SDSU ice cream, games, and the opportunity to learn about campus clubs.
On the grass between the Raven Precision Agriculture Center and the McFadden Biostress Lab, 25 of the 40 different CAFES clubs lined the sidewalk for the CAFES Prexy Council Ice Cream Social with hopes of recruiting new members to join their organization.
CAFES Prexy Council provided free SDSU ice cream and several games and activities at the event, such as corn hole. The CAFES Prexy Council also had a bingo game where students could go around and collect signatures from each of the club booths. If you got each box signed or got a bingo, you were entered into a drawing for prizes.
The social allows students to find something they are passionate about or interested in while meeting new people who are not necessarily in their classes or majors. It also gives students the opportunity to get involved on campus and in the Brookings community.
“It is really easy to find a club that interests you, and if there is a club that you are interested in and you do not necessarily have the experience, clubs are welcoming to students of all backgrounds to join,” said Greta Adolf, Alpha Zeta Honors fraternity representative.
Freshmen Riata Bultje and Chloe Hanson, who are studying Agriculture Education, appreciated the free ice cream and also enjoyed talking to the upperclassmen.
“The ice cream is a plus,” said Bultje. “But seeing the different opportunities throughout the clubs we can be involved in here at SDSU is a great thing to see.”
Hanson added that she thought it was fun to hear the upper-level students’ views and experiences on joining their club. Both students were excited to learn more about the Collegiate FFA/Ag Ed Club and the Collegiate Farm Bureau Club.
Prexy Council Treasurer Kyle Hagen and Prexy Council Secretary Tyler Anderson were seen giving out free t-shirts to all the students in attendance.
It is important to note that any student, even those pursuing a non-agricultural degree, can join a CAFES club or organization.
If you weren’t able to attend the Ice Cream Social, check the SDSU CAFES and CAFES Prexy Council social media for more information on club meetings and events.
