A new bike shop, DO Bike and Fitness opened its doors in May, offering Brookings a brand-new array of services, bicycles and fitness equipment.
The shop is located at 1738 6th St, in Brickwood Plaza, and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
DO Bike and Fitness, formerly known as Dakota Outdoors, has been in Aberdeen for over 60 years and is a staple to their community. Erik Dean, from Aberdeen, and the owner of DO Bike and Fitness, purchased the store in 2011 after the previous owners retired.
“I personally liked biking, and I liked the store… It’s been in Aberdeen for over 60 years now and it’s a staple in the community,” Dean said. “It’s been a good business to buy and keep it going.”
Dean’s interest in opening a new location in Brookings came after Sioux River Bicycles & Fitness closed in 2017.
“We started looking at opening a shop after Sioux River (Bicycles & Fitness) closed in 2017,” Dean said. “We liked Brookings, it’s a vibrant and growing community, so we wanted to bring a good bike shop back to town.”
DO Bike and Fitness is a full-service bike shop that houses brands like Trek, Electra, Borealis, Santa Cruz and Salsa Cycles. They offer trade-ins and discounted pre-owned bikes as well.
“We’ve got all kinds of bikes on sale for the start of the school year, we have a lot of E-bikes which have been really popular, and they make for an easy way to commute around town,” said Dean.
Local cyclist, Mac Rosenwald, bikes six to seven times weekly for exercise and transportation.
“The two things I enjoy most about biking is it gets me to where I need to be quicker…while also receiving good exercise,” Rosenwald said. “I have not heard about DO Bike & Fitness, but I will be checking them out soon; coincidentally I’m in need of maintenance on my current bike that I inherited from my older brother.”
Erick Stasa the manager at DO Bike and Fitness has enjoyed engaging with people here in Brookings.
“I’m new, I’ve been here three weeks, I enjoy working with my hands and learning a lot about fixing bikes,” said Stasa. “Brookings is very welcoming and inviting, and I’m excited to engage with people… and have people figure out we’re now here.”
DO Bike and Fitness recently collaborated with CrossFit Brookings to host a community bike ride that started from the store and went through Brookings. They use their Facebook page to announce future rides and other community events.
